Accountability in health education is a critical component of quality, transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness in health
systems. This paper reviews the concept of accountability in health education practice, focusing on its principles,
mechanisms, challenges, consequences of weak accountability, and strategies for strengthening accountability. A
conceptual and narrative review approach was adopted, drawing on contemporary literature on health professions
education, health-system governance, social accountability, monitoring and evaluation, and professional practice. The
review identified key mechanisms through which accountability is operationalized, including monitoring and evaluation,
supervision and performance appraisal, reporting and documentation, financial audits, accreditation and regulatory
processes, and feedback and complaint mechanisms. The review also identified transparency, integrity, responsibility,
responsiveness, equity and fairness, efficiency, and effectiveness as important principles underlying accountable health
education practice. Community participation and regulatory compliance further contribute to ensuring that health education
programmes remain relevant and responsive to population needs. However, weak monitoring systems, inadequate
funding, poor data management, limited community engagement, corruption, weak institutional oversight, and inadequate
professional capacity continue to constrain accountability. These challenges may contribute to poor service quality,
inefficient resource utilization, loss of public trust, inequitable access, and suboptimal health outcomes. The paper
concludes that strengthening accountability requires improved governance and monitoring systems, transparent resource
management, continuous professional development, effective regulatory enforcement, and meaningful stakeholder
participation. Institutionalizing these measures can promote ethical practice, improve health education outcomes,
strengthen public trust, and contribute to better overall health-system performance.
